Van Gogh painted a portrait of his mother from a black and white photograph. In a letter to his brother, Theo Van Gogh wrote: "I am making a portrait of my mother for myself. I cannot bear a colorless photograph, and I am trying to make it in harmony with the color as I see it in my memory."
